Conclusion
Fonts being used are:
- Verdana
- Merriweather
- Cabin
In order to use some of these fonts, we may need to import them at the top of our page. Although DB supports a wide choice of google fonts, they are not all imported (I've not fully understood the rules - and there is a bug here that CE are looking at, and have seen we need to import fonts, although we shouldn't need to). I think it imports what is in your theme (which may be what is in your design - but when you update your theme, those updates aren't getting into your design, so there is a disconnect) - but just safest to import the fonts you want to use, any fonts shown as courier on this page, are likely to be not imported and not on your computer).
Depending on which sort of page/widget, a different list of fonts is available (some being more work/harder for us to update), so there are some compromises.
Typography
What is typography? typography is the appearance of the text, and determines the readability of our page.
A typeface or font family is a selection of fonts - the font being a specific instance of a size and weight eg Verdana regular in 15pt.
There are a number of factors to consider when chosing a typeface:
- the size - the size of a font is based on the size of a capital, but that's only part of the story - the difference in height between upper and lowercase letters, or how far any descenders are below the baseline.
- the weight of letters (eg bold) or the slant (italic)
- the spacing
- the shape - do the letters have serifs (the little ticks that are at the end of any long strokes) or ball terminals (the blobs which might have been formed by a blob of ink ). Any ticks and balls can help differentiate between similar shaped letters, although sometimes can be a distraction
- whether there is ambiguity because I, l and 1 look similar.
There are a set of WebSafe fonts families - these are Arial, Courier New, Georgia, Times New Roman, Trebuchet MS and Verdana. What other fonts we can use, depends on eother what is installed on a users device or what we can import into the tools we are using (subject to licensing etc).
See below in the table for different fonts all at the same size.
